Yundi Li to perform in Vienna November 22 2001
Yundi Li, China's most prominent young pianist who won the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2000 (and newly signed to Deutsche Grammophon), will perform Chopin's First Piano Concerto on November 25 in the Goldenensaal of Vienna's Musikverein. Accompanying him is the premiere symphony orchestra of his home province, the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra(廣州交響樂團), with its music director Wingsie Yip. This will be Li's first European appearance with an orchestra since his competition triumph last year. It will also be the first of a four-concert tour of the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra (subsequent performances Nov. 26, Linz; Nov. 28, Mainz; Nov. 30, Berlin). Included in the programme are two orchestral works by contemporary Chinese composers: Duo Ye by Chen Yi (b. 1953) and The Emperor Duffs His Armour by Zhou Long (b. 1953). These two works were selected, according to Yu Qi Keng, the orchestra's administrative director, as 'pieces we want to introduce to the European audience'. Zhou Long's piece is an adaptation of a pipa solo work, and combines a Chinese traditional instrument with a western orchestra. Chen Yi is native Guangzhou who now has a flourishing career based in the United States (she is the current recipient of the Charles Ives Living Award). The final work of the programme will be Tchaikovsky's Second Symphony. 'We are more familiar with the Russian repertoire,' Yu added.
This tour is a major operation for the Guangzhou Symphony. Not only will there be 106 members (including staff) travelling on tour, but an accompanying group (of Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra and Yundi Li supporters) numbering 300 will also arrive in Vienna in time for the performance.
This will be a rare appearance of Yundi Li, and because of a booking conflict, he will only perform in Vienna. The remaining concerts will feature Chen Sha, fellow Chinese pianist who won fourth place in the 2000 Warsaw Chopin Competition.
