BENNO MOISEIWITSCH plays BEETHOVEN -Volume 2
Andante in F, WoO.57 (Andante favouri)
Violin Sonata No.9 in A, Op.47 (Kreutzer)
with Jascha Heifetz
(previously unpublished 1949 version)
Concerto No.3 in C minor, Op.37
Philharmonia Orchestra/Sir Malcolm Sargent
APR's second volume of Benno Moiseiwitsch's Beethoven recordings, all of which date from 1949-50, present him in the familiar roles of soloist and concerto protagonist as well as in the unusual guise of sonata partner.
The Kreutzer Sonata was Moiseiwitsch's only studio recording of a duo sonata. This 1949 version remained unpublished due to Jascha Heifetz's dissatisfaction with the balance (which, it has to be said, today strikes the ear as being close to a perfect sonic marriage between two equal partners!). The concerto recording, a relative rarity, was released only on 78rpm discs in the UK and quickly disappeared from the catalogue. The final offering is an elegaic reading of one of the pianist's "specialities", the Andante favori.
Moiseiwitsch is heard in luminous, sparkling form throughout, Heifetz is his radiant, dazzling self and the Philharmonia Orchestra under Sargent are, as ever, immaculate partners. The detailed and authoritative documentation and outstanding transfers are the established norm in APR's much-praised Moiseiwitsch series.
